Application Guidelines: Starwrap Superior synthetic roofing underlayment must be installed in accordance with all applicable building codes, primary roofing materials’ manufacturer’s installation and technical manuals, and this installation guide.
- Preparation: The deck surface must be dry and free of dust, dirt, loose nails, debris, and other protrusions. Ensure the deck has no voids, damaged, or unsupported areas. Damaged sheathing must be replaced.
- Ventilation: Because the underlayment is regarded as a vapor barrier, Starwrap Superior must be installed over properly ventilated spaces.
- Roof Pitch: Intended for use on sloped roofs with a 2:12 pitch or higher. It is not recommended for slopes less than 2:12. For low slopes (still 2:12 or higher), consider overlapping of 50% plus 1″.
- Installation: Unroll and spread out horizontally to the eave, with the printed side up. Each layer should be lapped a minimum of 4″ horizontally and 6″ vertically. Laps should be anchored about 1″ inward from the edge and run with the flow of water in a shingling fashion.
- Fasteners: Fasteners shall be corrosive-resistant roofing nails with 1″ minimum length, roofing nails with 1″ diameter plastic or metal caps, or 3/8″ head x 1″ minimum length leg roofing nails. Staples may be used if covered with shingles the same day or prior to any precipitation. Anchoring nails shall be 90° to the roof deck and shall not be under or over driven.
- Exposure: Starwrap Superior must be covered with primary roofing material within 90 days of installation. It offers a limited 90-day UV Exposure Guarantee.
- Extended Exposure/High Winds: In coastal areas or areas with prolonged exposure or high winds, doubling the recommended lap widths is suggested. Additionally, compatible sealants (low solvent plastic roofing cement meeting ASTM D-4586 Type 1 or Federal Spec SS-153 Type 1) or an exterior grade peel and stick tape can be applied to seal the overlaps.
- Building Codes: Always adhere to all building codes and regulations in the jurisdiction where Starwrap Superior synthetic roofing underlayment is being installed.
